Commemorative Coins of India

Within the last few years the use ability of the coins as a mass advertising medium has been recognized. Coins are used to honor personalities of the nation to celebrate important anniversaries or to put around certain political, economic or cultural projects into the center.

The commemorative coins issued since the independence to 1972 were provided as general circulation money.

(except the F.A.O. - set of 1971)

 

The first commemorative set of Jawaharlal Nehru 1964 with variants in English and Hindi

The era of commemorative coins of independent India started with the memory  of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, he on May 27th, 1964 died.

A set with 1 rupee and 50 Paise still was issued in the same year on November 14th.  (each  nickel)

 

 

Both coins had the portrait of Pandit Nehru in English with the legend Jawaharlal Nehru on the front.

After the issuance of these coins there was a great protest in the parliament. The name should be written in Hindi.

So the mint of coins was stopped as of the middle of 1965 and a new coin returned with the legend in Hindi the stamp in the 50 Paise.

The rupee coin, however, was left unchanged.

100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi 1969 with commemorative 10 Rupees

 

On this occasion Mahatma Gandhi was honored with the 2nd coining set as a father of the nation for his 100th birthday. Issues on October 3rd, 1969.
